Jesus: Lord of the Sabbath
Jan. 13, 2008
Teacher: Jim Folk
Passage: Mark 2:23-3:6
Jesus is the Messiah who does things only God can do; and yet he doesn't do the things people expected of him. He and his disciples break all the convention of the religious leaders. They don't fast, they befriend sinners, they pick grain and heal people on the Sabbath. In Mark 2:23-3:6, Jesus shows the Pharisees the true purpose of the Sabbath- to provide rest for mankind and to honor God by doing his will. Instead of focusing on what not to do, we should take time on the Sabbath to fulfill the mission of Christ: to seek and save the lost.

Verse of the Day
- For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
